THE SETUP

What you're actually making 🎠

A carousel where slide 1 is a short looping video and every other slide is a normal static image. That one moving cover is what catches people mid scroll, and no extra app is needed to post it: you upload the MP4 as the first slide like any other slide.

Step 1: have Claude art-direct the whole carousel 🧠

Paste this into Claude and fill in the brackets. It returns your copy, your layout, a motion spec, and the video prompt for step 3, all in one go.

You are my carousel art director. I'm making a carousel about [TOPIC] for [AUDIENCE].

My brand: [background colour, accent colour, fonts, sticker or texture style].

Give me four things:

1. Slide copy for 8 slides. Slide 1 is the hook cover (8 words max, curiosity or outcome, nothing I can't back up). One idea per slide, under 20 words each, sentence case. Last slide is the CTA.

2. Layout notes per slide that a designer could follow in Canva without asking me anything: headline size and placement, the supporting element (sticker, diagram, screenshot), and where the whitespace lives.

3. A motion spec for the cover ONLY:
- pick 2 or 3 elements that should move, and say why those
- direction and distance for each, as a fraction of the canvas (e.g. "drifts left 10% of canvas width")
- speed and easing (slow drift, gentle bob, quick pop)
- a loop under 6 seconds that ends where it starts
- the freeze-frame rule: the cover must still read perfectly as a single still frame, because that is how most people first see it

4. An image-to-video prompt I can paste into Kling AI. Describe the finished still cover first, exactly as it is. Then describe ONLY the motion to add. End with: "Keep all text exactly as it is. Do not change the layout, colours, faces, or composition. Subtle motion only."

Give me two motion options: one subtle and professional, one playful and scroll stopping.
🧠 Why the freeze-frame rule matters: a moving cover still spends most of its life as a still (grid, shares, the first split second), so the motion has to be a bonus, never the message.
✍️ Why distances are fractions of the canvas: "move the fish a bit" gives you random results, "10% of canvas width" gives you the same clean motion every time.

Step 2: build and animate it in Canva 🎨

Build your slides like normal, then animate the cover only.

  1. 🎨 Select the cover elements you want to move (shift-click a headline, a sticker, a photo).
  2. ✨ Click Animate in the toolbar: the Element tab animates what you selected, the Page tab animates the whole slide, and text boxes get their own Text tab (official steps: canva.com/help/animate-designs).
  3. 🖥️ For custom movement, choose Create an Animation and drag the element along the path you want, then set the speed. This is how you get Claude's "drifts left 10%" spec into Canva.
  4. ⏱️ Keep it tight: each animation runs 10 seconds max, and Claude's under-6-second loop spec sits comfortably inside that (same help page above).
  5. 💰 Cost note: the basic animation styles are included on the free plan, the extra ones are tagged with a Try Canva Pro icon (same help page above).
  6. 📥 Export the cover: Share, then Download, choose MP4 Video, and under "Select pages" tick only the cover page. Animations only survive in MP4 or GIF, a PNG or PDF export drops them (same help page above).
That's the clean version done: crisp text, zero AI artifacts, ready to post.

Step 3 (optional): the cinematic version with Kling AI 🐠

For photographic or illustrated covers where a whole scene should move (the goldfish effect), use Kling AI.

  1. 🐠 Go to kling.ai and sign in, then check your credit balance in the app before you plan a batch. Kling has changed its free allowance more than once and the current amount is not documented in one reliable place, so treat whatever the app shows you as the truth rather than any number you read in a blog post. Free renders come out at 720p with a Kling watermark, 1080p and no watermark need a paid plan.
  2. 🖼️ Open video generation and switch to Image to Video, then upload your finished cover image (Kling's whole pitch is "animate any image").
  3. 📋 Paste the image-to-video prompt Claude wrote in step 1, option subtle or option playful.
  4. 🔁 Generate, download the clip, and use it as slide 1.
One trap to avoid: AI video tools can warp small text. Keep cover text big and minimal, or generate the motion from an imagery-only version of the cover, then drop the finished clip back into Canva and layer your crisp text on top before exporting the MP4.
The free-credit path is for testing, not final posting: free-tier Kling clips carry a visible watermark, so use the free credits to nail the motion, then either post the clean Canva MP4 (genuinely free, no watermark) or upgrade to a paid plan to export the Kling version watermark-free at 1080p.
